English Language Arts A30

ELA A30 is a skills and theme-oriented course that is organized around the Canadian experience. The ELA A30 course will provide meaningful Canadian contexts for students to extend their language skills and strategies through opportunities to view, listen, read, speak, write, and use other forms of representing. The two main themes in this course are “Canadian Perspectives: Deep and Rich” and “Canadian Landscapes: Diverse and Dynamic.”

These themes will explore human nature, value and belief systems, the social condition, the natural and constructed worlds, technology, and history. The aim of the Saskatchewan ELA curriculum is to help students understand and appreciate language and to use it confidently and competently in a variety of situations for learning, communication, work, life, and personal satisfaction.

MODULE ONE:  Canadian Identity (20 days)

DAY 1 – 3: Complete all work for “Canadian Symbols: Our Flag and our Anthem.”
DAY 4 – 5: Complete all work for “Canadian Humour and Satire”.
DAY 6 – 7: Complete all work for “Canadian First Nations Perspective: Chief Dan George.”
DAY 8 – 9: Complete all work for “Regional Perspectives:  The Maritimes.”
DAY 10 – 11: Complete all work for National and Global Perspectives:  David Suzuki.”
DAY 12 – 13: Complete all work for “The Canadian Identity:  Editorial Assignment”.
DAY 14 – 15: Complete all work for TP-CASTT:  “Canada: Case History”
DAY 16 – 17: Complete all work for “Canadian Identity:  Democracy.”
DAY 18: Complete first “Y” On Earth journal entry
DAY 19: Complete checklist and self-assessment for Module One.


MODULE TWO:  The Glorious and the Scandalous (25 days)

DAY 1 – 2: Complete all work for introductory activity.
DAY 3 – 10: Complete all work for The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson:  Book One.
DAY 11 – 18: Complete all work for The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson:  Book Two.
DAY 19- 20: Complete all work for “Nelly McClung”
DAY 21 – 22: Complete all work for “Louis Riel”
DAY 23:  Complete second “Y” On Earth journal entry.
DAY 24: Complete checklist and self-assessment for Module Two.
Omit exam on Modules One and Two


MODULE THREE:  Blurred Margins (23 days)

DAY1 – 2: Complete all work for “The Metis Nation”
DAY3 – 4: Complete all work for “The First Nations”
DAY 5 – 6: Complete all work for “Canadian Immigrants”
DAY 7 – 13: Complete narrative writing assignment.
DAY 14 – 20: Complete all work for Unit One Final Assignment (choice of “Canadian Voices” or “Glorious and Scandalous”
DAY 21: Complete third “Y” On Earth journal entry.
DAY 22: Complete checklist and self-assessment for Module Three.


UNIT TWO:  CANADIAN LANDSCAPES:  DIVERSE AND DYNAMIC


MODULE FOUR:  Historical and Contemporary Landscapes (13 days)

Day 1 – 2:  Read “Unit Two:  Introduction” and complete all work for “Catharine Parr Traill”

DAY 7 – 8: Complete all work “Dick Diespecker.”
DAY 9 – 10: Complete all work for “Canadian Tourism” (critique of an advertisement)
DAY 11: Complete fourth “Y” On Earth journal entry.
DAY 12: Complete checklist and self-assessment for Module Four.


MODULE FIVE:  Physical and Psychological Landscapes (41 days)

DAY 1 – 3: Complete all work for “The Painted Door”
DAY 4 – 8: Complete all work for “Still Stands the House”
DAY 9 – 18: Complete all work for Wild Geese:  Chapters 1 – 7
