|Indigenous Studies 30: Canadian Studies is based on the premise that distinct perspectives are common, that diversity of truth exists, and that he motivations for most behaviors and attitudes may be traced to the worldviews and philosophical orientations of people. Within Aboriginal philosophy, four dimensions of human nature (mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical) are identified and viewed as interrelated. These are developed through personal commitment. This course advocates a holistic, inquiry-based, activity-oriented approach. The aim of Indigenous Studies is to develop personal awareness and cultural understanding and to promote the development of positive attitudes in all students towards Indigenous peoples.|
Introduction Unit – 10 Days
Topics: World View, Culture, Important Terminology, History of Indigenous People in Canada
Unit 1 – Aboriginal and Treaty Rights – 25 Days
Topics: Indigenous Diversity in Canada, Indigenous Values and Beliefs, Canadian Expansion, Aboriginal and Treaty Rights
Unit 2 – Governance – 30 Days
Topics: Traditional Governance, Governance Under Colonial Rule, The Indian Act, the Constitution.
Unit 3 – Land Claims and Treaty Land Entitlements – 25 Days
Topics: Indigenous Relationship to the Land, Land Claims, Treaty Land Entitlements, Metis Land Claims.
Unit 4 – Economic Development 25 Days
Topics: Economic Development and Resource Management, Aboriginal Rights and Economic Developments, Implications of Economic Development, Perspectives on Economic Development.
Unit 5 – Social Development – 35 Days
Topics: Conflict Resolution, Foreign Justice Systems, Education, Traditional Wellness, Alternative Justice, Health and Child Welfare, Social Justice.
